We are hearing more and more complaints of high electric bills. Due to aging, electricians are finding that the thermostats and/or low voltage relays are failing with more frequency than ever. This failure of course results in higher usage, thus higher bills. Normal rule of "thumb" - if your unit has the "rectangular Thermostat" this is the line voltage which does not have relays; therefore, the problem could be with the thermostat. If your unit has the "round globe thermostat" this has the low voltage relay; therefore, the relay may be faulty and need replacement. It may be worthwhile to have a licensed electrician check the system out for you.
Are your bathroom breakers constantly tripping? In most cases, the same GFI breaker that operates your bathroom receptacles operates the exterior outlet. If moisture gets into the outside outlet, it will trip the breaker causing loss of power to the bathrooms. An electrician can remove the single GFI breaker that currently operates the outside outlet and bathrooms and replace it with multiple individual GFI breakers. In the interim, gently blowing warm air into the outside outlet with a hair dryer usually gives you a temporary fix.
